Records of Their Years with Red Beard Wall mastermind Aaron Wall & exclusive track premiere of "The Warming"

Formed in 2016 and the creative outlet of Texas native Aaron Wall, Red Beard Wall’s delivery of  heavy, hooky and concise compositions would eventually see the band signed to Argonauata Records with their debut self titled LP released in May 2017.   With riffs that could level city blocks and vocals that are the perfect combination of soaring melody and caustic screams of despair, Red Beard Wall are back and set to deliver their most bone crunching material to date in the form of new long player 'The Fight Needs Us All' which will be hitting all good stockists on February 22nd 2019 as Digital Download, CD and Vinyl. The album pre-orders are now available in the following editions, bundles: HERE LP: HERE CD: HERE

Influenced by amazing bands such as, Floor, Helmet, Conan, Yob, Pallbearer, Baroness, and countless others, today we have a double helping of Aaron and his 7.5 tons of beard, as THE SLUDGELORD exclusively premieres a brand new track entitled “The Warming” which you can check out below. Not only that we invited Aaron to discuss some of his favourite records.  Welcome to this Red Beard Wall edition of “Records of Their Years”.

THE SLUDGELORD: Favourite album from the year you were born?

Aaron: First off to you, oh mighty SLUDGELORD...thank you so much for having me!

I was born in 1977. Therefore the answer is Motorhead’sself-titled debut. Really not much elaboration needed.

THE SLUDGELORD: First record you bought with your own money?

Aaron: Yes! I remember well! I was 8 years old, I had saved up a little cash from mowing yards and such, specifically I got Van Halen1984”, Beastie BoysLicence to Ill” and Run D.M.CRaising Hell”. All 3 of those records are still very dear and close to my heart. The very 1st time I ever performed was in a 3rd grade talent show. I did a mean version of the Run D.M.C.deep cut “You Be Illin.” Oh the memories from years gone by! Haha!!

THE SLUDGELORD: Favourite non metal / rock album?

Aaron: That’s a tough one, but I’d have to say Wu-Tang’s36 Chambers”. I was a bit of a hip-hop nut in my formative years, and honestly still am, although obviously my love for the heavy eventually overtook to top position musically in my life.

THE SLUDGELORD: Album that most disappointed you?

Aaron: I guess I don’t think that way about records I don’t necessarily like. I just feel like it wasn’t made for me. I definitely try to look for something in it, that I do enjoy. If I cant, I move on to something that does move me.

THE SLUDGELORD: Favourite album of all time or if you prefer album (s) you’d run back into a burning building to rescue?

Aaron: I’m gonna choose 3. All from Mastodon, “Remission”, “Leviathan”, “Blood Mountain”. Those three albums reinvigorated my enthusiasm for heavy music. After growing up in Texas in the 90’s with Pantera being a huge early influence, a lot of metal had gotten stale for me personally. Mastodon brought a renewed and energetic love back that I though may have been fading away. That love and passion has not waned since.

THE SLUDGELORD: Favourite album (s) of 2018?

Aaron: Daughters, “You Won’t Get What You Want”. The intensity is so palpable throughout. The songs are just on another level. 10 out of 10!

THE SLUDGELORD:..and finally The last album you bought?

Aaron: The last album I bought, ironically enough is a pre-order of the new Red Beard Wall album “The Fight Needs Us All.”  Extremely shameless self promotion, I know...but in my defence, it’s also 100% the truth.  Once again, much much gratitude and appreciation for allowing me to be a part. ALL LOVE. ALL APPRECIATION. ALL HAIL!!!

WOORMS sign to Sludgelord Records! – Premiere New Song ‘Stiff Upper Lisp’, Vinyl Pre-Order Announcement and Artwork Reveal for debut "Slake"

Fresh from a string of exciting new additions to our roster of bands over at SLUDGELORD RECORDS, the aim of which is to release the best & heaviest riffs from the underground doom scene, an opportunity presented itself, that was just too cool to miss.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think the label would release more than one record, let alone, make today’s announcement of an exciting new addition to the label, which will represent the 19thnew band to come on board to THE SLUDGEORD roster.  Guys we’re stoked to welcome WOORMS.

Formed in 2017 in Louisiana, WOORMS – featuring guitarist/vocalist Joey Carbo, bassist John Robinson, and drummer Aaron Polk – are something of a sleeping colossus. Based in Baton Rouge, the band has been delivering a devastating and brutal mélange of riffs and noise-rock righteousness on the precipice of significance for some time.

Despite only being a year or so into their sonic existence WOORMShave already racked up a number of releases; a collection of demos, digital one-offs (‘Daddy Was A Masker,’ 'The Math Says, Yes') and a split with NOLA thrashers, A Hanging.

Looking for a new partnership to assist with the promotion of their debut album, SLUDGELORD RECORDS & WOORMS are now set to deliver the colossus that is "Slake" set for  its official release on January 18th 2019. Two cuts from the record have already caused a stir with ‘Mouth is a Wound’ premiering at Decibel Magazine and a second track 'Find a Meal, Find a Bed, Find a God' , which for all intents and purposes is the perfect introduction to the band.

WOORMS come across like a lumbering, symphonic noise-rock shank fight between the fattest of riffs and the thinnest of patience with the world at large. Making for a devastatingly terse and perverse experience, from the pinnacle to the point of no return, their new record "Slake" falls psychotically through the fuzz and unholy grind of bands like KARP, Jesus Lizard and Neurosis

"Slake"will be released digitally and on limited colour vinyl with full Colour gatefold sleeve and today  as well as the announcement of this massive partnership, we are premiering a new track ‘Stiff Upper Lisp’ and artwork reveal of the album (by Victor LeBlanc) , both of which you can check out below.  Preorders are also live HERE and Joey Carbo shares his views about the “Slake” artwork

The album as an entire package has always been very important to all of us. Obviously, as musicians we take our record collections very seriously. Because, it’s your work and your research as well as being art that you consume, you know? So, when I’m putting out a record the art is half the process. It all has to be presented just right or the vision may not translate. Fold out jackets and liner notes were huge to me, growing up, and to my education. I poured over those as a kid and I still do that. When I saw Victor’s work, I didn’t want another artist for this album. This painting was perfect, and I could hear the main track playing over or out of it. He took some convincing and I got that. Initially, he said no. I asked if I could try to change his mind. We met, and I talked to him about “Find a Meal, Find a Bed, Find a God” and why I thought it made his work a great fit. He had heard our music and liked it well enough or whatever, I guess, but didn’t think it was a fit for his piece. I said, let me show you this new song; it’s the reason we need this painting. Joshua M. Wilkinson at The Company did the layout and design work and we were really lucky to have him on board, and Diogo Soares at Soares Artwork in Portugal did illustrations for the inner sleeve and liner notes. We had a fucking dream team for the art on this album and that is what fans can expect for every WOORMS release. We want to put out really pretty records that crush ears and take ass. Or is it the other way ‘round?”

TRACK PREMIERE: pure doom to its core, URSA unleash the tyrannous "Serengeti Yeti"

With riffs so thunderous they tear holes through mountain peaks, URSA enchants in the heaviest tradition of mystical sorcery, telling tales of animal spirits forged from smoke that dissipates above ancient caravan campfires.  With grandiose stories of wizards, dragons, spiders, and demons; URSA is the heaviest of bard, singing fascinating, barbarian tales of cutting human heads off with one swoop of the steel and brewing complex potions out of dragonfly wings.

URSA's monstrous debut album is reminiscent of doom and heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Dio, Saint Vitus, Sleep, and Candlemass. The band's sole purpose on earth is to serenade through tales of beasts risen and slain.

Consisting of ¾ of the legendary prog metal band Cormorant, “Abyss Between the Stars” condenses all the innate and heavy mastery of Cormorant into focused, catchy, and powerful riffs that draw the listener in and empower them on their journey through the untamed wild west. Pure doom to its core. A choose-your-own-adventure tale in audio form, today at THE SLUDGELORD we can exclusively present a brand new track for your ears only.  Check out the great and the powerful, “Serengeti Veti” below as well as a quote about the track from vocalist/bassist Matt Solis.  Preorder a being taken (HERE)

“Serengeti Yeti” is definitely one of our favorite songs on the record—it has a nice mix of traditional doom and progressive rock/sludge, and the subject matter fits right in with our high-fantasy aesthetic. It tells the story of an ancient yeti who, after fleeing from a group of hunters, finds a mysterious vortex that hurls him into the middle of the African desert. It’s your classic “fish out of water” tale…except this fish wants to messily devour everyone in his path.

Copenhagen, Denmark based ALKYMISTis a new name in doom and one that is certain to pique the interest of even the most hardened traditionalist of the genre.   Unifying the crushing tones of Meshuggah into a slow punishing force, ALKYMIST layer their riffs with texture to ensure their compositions are both crushingly heavy and dynamic.

REVIEW & TRACK PREMIERE: Famyne, "Famyne"

 By: Richard Maw

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 22/09/2018
Label: Independent

it is absolutely clear that Famyne will be both leading the way for British doom in the years to come and also may well become a band apart from the genre and the “scene.”

“Famyne” CD//DD//LP track listing:

1). Wearthless
2). Faustus
3). Slave Ship
4). Ghosts
5). Tremor
6). Dreamweaver

The Review:

The UK is the de facto home of doom- what with Black Sabbath kicking off the genre (and heavy metal in general) way back when. In recent times, though, Maryland in the US, Sweden and Germany have all had thriving scenes going on and the UK's fortunes faded with the demise of Cathedral. Not any more, though.

The UK can boast several first class doom bands- that's doom, not sludge. Famyne have placed themselves neatly into the upper echelons of the current (and the “been around for donkey's years”) crop of bands. This is traditional doom; low slow and weighty. The vocals are clean, the guitars and bass distorted, the drums pound (and drummer Jake Cook uses a fair amount of subtlety with his snare grace notes as well) and the songs sprawl and soar.

Epic opener “Wearthless” sets the tone with an impressive rhythmic foundation and no small amount of Doors inspired psychedelia in the vocal production and delivery. The band tackle the big subjects in “Faustus”- big in the realms of metal, that is- and provide appropriately big riffs to go with it. Convincingly double tracked vocals are a nice touch and the overall production job is worth noting for its weight and clarity.

“Slave Ship” utilises dynamics effectively, introducing a diversity of sound not too often found in the trad doom world. Tom Vane's vocals are a defining stamp on the band's sound- they lend it an ethereal quality. As the album progresses through “Ghosts” and “Tremor”, there are numerous influences that can be picked out here and there; maybe some AIC, maybe even some shoe-gaze type stuff? This is certainly not an average, meat and potatoes Sabbath rip off; even if the Sabs are audible in the witches brew the band have concocted.

The touches of violin, the soaring vocals and the rock solid instrumental work of all band members add up to make this record both engaging and even surprising. It is very accomplished stuff; streets ahead of most band's debut records and with a unique sound.

As the album progresses through the nine and a half minutes of “Dreamweaver”- no, not that “Dreamweaver”, so beloved of Crowbar and Wayne's World- it is absolutely clear that Famyne will be both leading the way for British doom in the years to come and also may well become a band apart from the genre and the “scene.”

There is no way of knowing how far the band is going to go, but if they get the right cards dealt to them it will be a lot further than opening band status. They are young, they are unique and they are undoubtedly going to give all the UK doom bands a run for their money. Sabbath are gone, Cathedral and Iron Man likewise, Pentagram are headless, Saint Vitushave lost one original member already and Wino won't be around forever. If you were placing bets on who was going to carry the torch from here... Well, check out this superb debut and hear for yourself as we stream the sublime “Faustus” below

TRACK PREMIERE: The Necromancers, "Secular Lord"

Having been previously unfamiliar with French occult doom quartet The Necromancers , it came as somewhat of surprise that the band are set to release their second full length, a mere 12 months after their debut.  No small feat by today’s standards.

Back in the day, when Sabbathwas known to few, but on the cusp of greatness, legendary acts such as Sabbath, would bang out an album a year, tour it, get back in the studio and 12 months later, another record would be released.  To be able do this with regularity it one thing, but to consistently produce strong material is perhaps the exception to the rule.  What am I trying to say then?  Well for one The Necromancers are clearly dedicated hard working band, but perhaps more significantly, having reviewed their previous album, they’re able to produce consistently kick ass albums and when we got the call to premiere a track, I couldn’t have been more stoked.

Although this French quartet's second album still features the lumbering doom and cultish heavy rock they are known for, it is clear on new album “Of Blood And Wine”they appear to have dug deeper within themselves as song writing and in turn they have produced a record of great depth and quality.  So without further ado check out the track “Secular Lord” below as well as small quote from the band about the track.  Recorded at Nomad Studio, “Of Blood And Wine” must be like the 100th record Ripple Music will have released this year, but all kidding aside, the record will available via this distinguished label on October 5th 2018 on all formats.

“Secular Lord” talks about Vlad 'The Empalor' Tepes. He is the historical character who inspired Bram Stoker for Dracula. We chose to talk about the legend and the myth here. We think it’s another song exploration for us, having that kind of voices and guitars sounds. Feels great for a first single!

TRACK PREMIERE: The Dark Red Seed debut "Dukkha"

Seattle's THE DARK RED SEED are set to release their new album "Becomes Awake" on May 18th 2018. The band which is the musical outlet of Tosten Larson, guitarist for Seattle dark folk musician King Dude is an amazing combo of dark folk and heavy psych music and today we premiere their song "Dukkha".

Tosten commented:

“Dukkha” was not the first song written for the “Becomes Awake” album but it was written intentionally as the starting point of our story.  Instrumentally it is supposed to be big and loud and chaotic.  The bridge is meant to have a dissonant, uncomfortable chord progression with saxophones, Synths and guitars blaring all around.  The verse and chorus section is vaguely inspired by an similar chaotic At the Drive In song I heard many years ago.  “Dukkha” doesn’t actually sound like the song it was inspired by but rather I wanted to create a jarring angular feeling I got when I first heard the At the Drive In song.  The reason for all the chaos and stress the song should invoke is because that is what the song is about and that is where the journey of this story begins.  “Dukkha” translates to pain and suffering.  In this case my interpretation of” Dukkha” could be seen as experienced by unchecked hedonism causing a life out of balance.”

INTERVIEW & TRACK PREMIERE: End Christian deliver a masterful dose of electronic pop music

Dante Torrieri (c)
End Christian’s “Energy and Strength” was one of my favorite unclassifiable or “outlier” records of last year.  On the surface, you’d assume you were looking at a metal supergroup, with members from Brutal Truth, Fad Nauseum, Starkweather, and Hex Inverter all making contributions.  But you’d be dead wrong.  A multi-genre sojourn through electronic, hardcore, goth and industrial experimentation, it was original and oddly moving.

On May 25th, the loose collective drops their 2nd album, “Bach Part One”, an even more dramatic step away from metal expectations.  Despite some killer guitar work and key contributions from modern metal legends, it is a masterful slice of electronic pop music.  Founder and key member Christian McKenna took the time to speak with me about the project’s foundations, the collaborative process on the new record, live performances, and the wealth of material coming from End Christian in the future.  We also have the honor of debuting one of my favorite tracks of the record, “Great Escapes”, featuring featuring Justin Broadrick of Godflesh/Jesu.  “Bach Part One” is available for preorder at here

Christian can you tell us a little about your musical background and your story of the genesis of the End Christian project?

CM: I’ve been playing in a bunch of bands over the years.  Usually a more traditional band-type setting… 4-5 guys where we met with some frequency to keep a set sharp and to be ready in case something came along.  I felt kind of stagnant with doing things that way and just rehashing things over and over again in order to stay sharp for some kind of performance.  I got fried from doing gigs and wanted to pull back on that and focus on writing a bit more.  I wanted to blow up the way I was doing stuff.

I’ve been able to play with great musicians over the years, but I felt like I was stagnating a bit.  I wanted to be a bit more spontaneous with my writing and try some ideas I hadn’t gotten the chance to try before.

On “Energy and Strength” you worked with Richard Hoak, Gillian Dreadful and Vincent Rosa.  How do they figure into End Christian as it exists on the new record?  How structured is it as a key core of musicians?

I think I did a bit of a disservice to those people by saying that those people were in the band before I even asked if they’d be in the band.  I was fortunate enough that when I reached out, everyone was in!  A band I played with, Hex Inverter, had played a show with Starkweather a year or two ago, and I remember Vincent had come up and commented that he dug what we were doing.  I made a mental note that maybe I’d have the opportunity to work with him.  And then I reached out to other bass players who fell through, but when I got back to Vincent, he was willing.

I had done some stuff with Rich in the past.  I made it clear to him that, even though he played drums on the first record, I was coming at him more for his openness.  He has another project called Peacemaker that’s kind of an ambient, noise, jazz freakout stuff, and I was thinking more of THAT kind of stuff, but I’d never specified that.  When we first got together he’d focused on drums.  On this record, he doesn’t play drums at all.  He does some soundscape type stuff and he wrote lyrics to “Anywhere with You”, which I think is a beautiful song.  He sings the lead on that one, and does some background vocals.  That’s some of the stuff from his wheelhouse I wanted to integrate into what we were doing.

That song, “Anywhere with You”, is particularly affecting.  I wouldn’t have figured that the guy who plays drums on the key Brutal Truth records would have created that.

Right on! That’s what’s beautiful to me about it.  It’s a simple lyric.  It isn’t vague or anything.  It’s not deceptive, it’s just a love song he’s singing to his wife.  It’s very vulnerable!  Alap and I were sitting at the board and the song started from a loop I’d created from “Owner of a Lonely Heart” by Yes.  We manipulated it a bit and Alap had thrown down some beats.  Rich was sitting real quiet in the background and he popped up and said “I think I have something!” And that song came out of nowhere and I was just blown away.  We threw on some harmony vocals and tweaks but it was pretty close to what he originally laid down there.

I know you’re a progressive rock fan, and it’s funny to hear this and compare it with the often forgotten, 80s synth driven era of a lot of those bands – Genesis, King Crimson, even Rush.  How do those influences play out for End Christian?

A lot of people are always like, “I only like the Peter Gabriel Genesisand I like that stuff too, but I like the stuff in the 80s!  I think that it doesn’t get enough recognition with bands later – like Radiohead, I think that’s where that stuff came from.  And that stuff, King Crimson and Genesis and Yes, that holds up really well for me still.  The same way that Black Flag and Minutemenrecords hold up.  That all sounds relevant when I listen to it now.

What is the story behind the title, Bach Part One?

Originally the record was supposed to be a double album.  Alap engineered and produced on “Energy and Strength”, but he got really involved on this one.  He co-wrote maybe 75% of this one, and got really waist deep in it and is a member of the band for this one.  When we were going back we had tracked around 20 songs, and when we were sequencing everything out, he talked me out of releasing a double album.  Which is not a terrible idea because I know attention spans are limited, so we’re releasing in two parts.  “Part Two” will be released at a later date.  We have about four albums worth of stuff right now recorded and a couple other records we’ll start recording in the fall.

You have a lot of people stepping in for guest roles in this: Justin Broadrick from Godflesh and Jesu, Kevin Hufnagel from Gorguts, Andrew Southard from Giant Squid, Mike Hill from Tombs, Sheena Powell who I hadn’t heard of before but I can absolutely see why you’d want her to contribute to the record after hearing her vocals.  Can you tell me what the process is of approaching these people and saying “Hey I want you on an electronic pop record!”

I don’t think I directly said “Hey let’s do an electronic pop record.” *laughs* I’m half kidding. Kevin I know from working at Relapseand we’ve known each other a long time.  He’s only on this record for one track but he’s all over the next record playing baritone ukulele.  Almost as a percussive instrument along with 808s.  Alap has me convinced that the 808 is the new riff.  I’m almost of the mentality that guitar is dead, and the space and room between 808 hits on these records are letting listeners connect the dots by themselves.

Has there been any talk about performing in a live setting?

We had a rehearsal last week actually!  We got together last weekend for like the first End Christian practice ever with the mindframe that we were trying to work on a set.  We do want to play some shows and celebrate all the different records that we’re making.  When we got together over the weekend we only tried material from “Energy and Strength” since it was the only stuff three or four of us had gotten into a room and tried to jam together.  It’s not going to sound exactly like the record but that’s pretty cool.  Rich had the idea to maybe do a live record since Ballinger and a few of the other songs are true to the spirit of the writing but sound a lot different.

“Great Escapes” (premiere above), one of my favorites, was a spooky track but almost had a sensual feeling – like a late 80s, early 90s R&B track.  It wouldn’t be out of place as a Sade track.

I’m a huge Sade fan!  I’ve been a huge Sade fan.  You made my fucking life with that *laughs*.  I can’t believe you said that.  I’ve been on a huge Sade kick.

I had some keyboards and lyrics and Alap had some electronic stuff.  I reached out to Justin and wanted him to finish mixing the song.  He talked about going for a Jesu type vibe and turned it into a kind of mood piece.  I can’t say we were trying to do a Sade thing at the time but I’ll take it as a compliment!  And his guitar at the end is abrupt and kind of ambient but you can tell it’s Justin.  He definitely left his mark.

When you said sensual – Alap and I, joking around, said we wanted to be playing music for women and not dudes with beards and wallet chains.

What’s the plans for the rest of 2018 and 2019?

“Bach Part One”is coming out in May.  We have a series of vinyl coming out on Alap’s label, Internet and Weed.  It’s kind of a new world for me but those will have some songs with a capella versions and maybe some instrumental versions for DJs to use.  Then we’ll finish up the other record with the baritone uke.  We’re talking with some other labels now and I think that one will come out in the fall.  It’s weird that we’re talking about this Bach record now but I can’t wait to NOT talk about it again.  I think in the fall we’re going to record another zigzag from some of these things.  A kind of doomy, noisy record, with Vince doing what he’s known for and Rich doing drums again, and do it as a power trio.  And then a string of shows in the fall to celebrate the release of all this music.  We just gotta figure out how to play it.

The End

TRACK PREMIERE: London heavyweights Limb debut "Wych Elm"

London heavyweights Limb set the controls for the heart of the sun with their third record on New Heavy Sounds.  “Saboteurs of the Sun” sees Limb hurl themselves skyward to discover new worlds within the riff–time continuum.  Building on their previous two records, which positioned the band in the thick of the UK heavy fuzz scene, the band now move beyond their sludge–doom origins to explore a cosmos of bubbling synthesizers, screaming organs, ecstatic choirs and galaxies of wild unidentified sounds, but feaer not the grooves, the power and the chops are all there in spades – helped by a masterful production from Russ Russell (Napalm Death, At the Gates, etc.)  “Saboteurs Of The Sun” will land on May 25th and today you can get your first taste of the record  with an exclusive stream of the track “Wych Elm” below.  Preorders are being taken here

Singer Rob Hoey had the following to say about track:

"In 1943, a woman’s dead body was found stuffed inside the hollow trunk of a wych elm tree in the West Midlands. No-one knows who she was. Perhaps she was a Nazi spy, perhaps a local prostitute, perhaps the victim of an occult killing – after all, her severed hand was found elsewhere, consistent with the ‘Hand of Glory’ ritual. The mystery remains very much alive through the enigmatic reappearance of graffiti asking, “Who put Bella in the wych elm?” We still want to know."

Limb Live Rituals:
Sat 19 May - London, Underdog Gallery
