Carach Angren

In 2003, Carach Angren (“Irons Jaws” in Sindarin, an Elvish language from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth) is formed in the southern regions of Limburg, The Netherlands, by Seregor, Namtar and Ardek.

The band choses a classical, storytelling approach in the broad genre. Symphonic arrangements on keys characterize the bands sound as it is the perfect underscore to the storytelling element. No separate songs, but a complete concept is worked out on “The Chase Vault Tragedy”. On their first demo, Carach Angren pick up on the story behind paranormal causes in a 17th century Barbados and, in their unique way, bring it to life through lyrics and music.

The fascination for the paranormal resurfaces on the following release “Ethereal Veiled Existence”. A remarkable story told in 5 songs. The strange occurrences around one of the most spectacular photographs of a ghost ever taken are the basis for this mini CD.

With the two self-released EPs on their résumé it is time to bring the legends to life on stage … not merely by the theatrical atmosphere, but for an important part by some old-fashioned thrash metal. Yes, there’s the dark clothing and characteristic make-up, but Carach Angren does not omit the incredibly tight metal for some good old headbanging.

In early 2007, Carach Angren haunts the halls of Maddening Media who hereby decide to grant abode to the dutch wraiths in order to be enchanted instead of being cursed.

The recording for “Lammendam”, a concept album around the ghost of a lady in white, is done in July/August and November 2007. The finishing touch is added in January 2008.

As of the release date in April 2008, Carach Angren instantly impose themselves as the premier dutch black-metal act, with an exploding number of fans and concerts across Europe.

In August 2009, Carach Angren re-entered the TidalWave studio to record their sophomore shocker named “Death Came Through A Phantom Ship”, an album of naval terror and elemental fright which was released on February 26th, 2010. The album got rave reviews through the metal world. Right after that the band went on an successful European tour with Dark Funeral.

Formed in 2000 by a violinist and a double bassist, Virginia-based death and thrash metal outfit Arsis -- a musical term that relates to the original concept of "arsis and thesis," meaning up and down beats, to be more exact -- got their start in Boston by Berklee College of Music students and friends James Malone (the violinist) and Michael Van Dyne, arguably more as a time filler rather than a serious project. With Van Dyne taking up drumming duties (he'd spent time studying drum performance) and Malone handling all the other duties of the group, Arsis recorded their first demo in 2001, and a follow-up in 2002. After playing a handful of live shows and getting some exposure for their well-received demos, Arsis became a full-time -- not to mention serious -- project, signing their first record deal -- with Willowtip Records -- in 2004. Their debut for the indie label, A Celebration of Guilt, won them high honors in the metal music press, even earning comparisons to genre legends At the Gates -- specifically their final album, Slaughter of the Soul. Arsis also began their first bout of touring in support of their work at this point, filling out their live ranks with session musicians -- a setup that would continue for a number of years. In 2005, Arsis released the EP A Diamond for Disease, which not only won them even more critical praise, but whose title track was requisitioned by a ballet company in New York, the Ballet Deviare.

Arsis began recordings on their next full-length in 2006. The album, United in Regret, was a more technical affair, produced by Daath guitarist Eyal Levi, and would help secure the band a deal with Nuclear Blast. Although the band had now reached new heights in the national metal scene, including shared stages and tours with such names as Enslaved, Goatwhore, and Cephalic Carnage, drummer -- and founder, it must be noted -- Michael Van Dyne decided to call it a day. Although down to just one official member, Arsis were ready to push forward. Composer, vocalist, and guitarist James Malone quickly rebounded, putting together a more standard-format full-time band, taking on drummer Darren Cesca, guitarist Ryan Knight, and United in Regret sessions bassist Noah Martin. (For a brief time, due to Malone losing his voice, Mike Parks took on vocal duties for Arsis. By 2007, Malone was back on the mike, and the band had decided to part ways amicably with Parks.) Arsis returned to the fore with their 2008 full-length, We Are the Nightmare, which followed in the footsteps of their previously recorded work, earning them critical praise and helping to shore up higher numbers in their nationwide fan base. A tour with legendary thrash pioneers Exodus was planned for January of that year. ~ Chris Tru

Lost Dreams was foundet 2003 by Andreas Maierhofer and Herbert Sopracolle.

The Sound of "Lost Dreams" can be described as modern Melodic Deathmetal interspersed with discreet elements of Dark-, Black- and Thrash Metal. But never disregarding the melodic component. Midtempo rhythms for headbanging, are standing equal to real neckbreacking fast songs, always leaded by the devilish catchy sound of two interwoven, harmonious guitars. Some unobtrusive keyboard melodies, fitting breaks and floating time changes complete the sound of "Lost Dreams".

LOST DREAMS played with Bands like SLAYER, SOULFLY, MOTÖRHEAD, BLIND GUARDIAN, SIX FEET UNDER, OBITUARY, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, ANTHRAX, SEPULTURA, MORBID ANGEL, RAGE,...

The opening track “Awake” is one which defines the band’s sound, with Jacobs saying, “we get more diverse, different keys, tempos and styles throughout, but that’s the song that defines what we sound,” while “Reflections” is another band favorite, thanks to its unforgettable melodies. Jacobs says that “Forsaken” is the song where “we stepped outside the box to show a different side of the band, with clean guitars.”

It appears as though the Mutiny Within story is just beginning and that the ins and outs of their formation lead to a happy ending, so to speak. “We dedicated our whole lives to this,” Jacobs said. “Two guys dropped their lives in England and didn’t know if it would work, since we weren’t even signed at the time, but it means so much to us and we had that dedication to do it.”

Certainly, Mutiny Within aren’t a traditional band, having used technology and the Internet to their benefit and thus forcing the band to work in different ways. “Most bands get in a van, go out, play, tour, tour, tour,” Jacobs said. “We’re at that chapter now. The focus for us was always just writing songs. That’s been our lives. We played 30 shows with Chris and then got signed. We made every song as special as the next. Each track has lots of time put into it. We were a band that aspired to get a deal and make records, so we made the focus should be of efforts be the songs.”

Mission accomplished on Mutiny Within: 13 songs that usher in a new generation of metal.

Orphaned Land Band

Kobi Farhi - Vocals
Uri Zelha - Bass
Yossi Sassi - Electric, Acoustic & Nylon-string guitars, Bouzoki, Cumbush
Chen Balbus - Electric guitars
Matan Shmuely - Drums

Israel's breakthrough band Orphaned Land, the pioneers of Oriental metal, have returned with All Is One and an in-your-face message for everyone to embrace:
"People should be judged by their hearts and inner sincerity, not their religious beliefs."

Three years have passed since the release of The Never Ending Way Of ORWarriOR (Co-Produced with Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree) and in that time Orphaned Land have toured the world, brought their message to the people, and almost 20 years into their career, continue to cement their reputation as band with a purpose. Something beyond melodic death metal, black metal and folk metal, Orphaned Land doesn't base their music on myths that other bands sing about; they focus on situations in the real world that are happening right here, right now. You'd be hard pressed to find any other musicians in Israel that have influenced so many people in outside the country's borders, and in the eye of opposing religious views Orphaned Land are, in many ways, considered enemies. There's no escaping the fact, however, that the band's music has broken down those barriers and unified a community. It wasn't a new age band or a jazz band that brought people together; it was a Middle Eastern heavy metal band called Orphaned Land.

This has been acknowledged by the fans, who did the unthinkable and started an online petition in 2012 to nominate Orphaned Land for the coveted Nobel Prize. Many metal fans felt strongly about the band's commitment to inviting the Arab world to listen to their music in spite of resistance and outright bans from Arab League countries. Thousands of people from all over the world have since signed the petition.

"I could never imagine in my wildest imagination that one day an Israeli band would be followed by thousands of Muslims from all over the world," says frontman Kobi Farhi, noting that Orphaned Land are the proud recipients of four Peace Awards issued by their Turkish brethren. "If we do a show in Istanbul, Turkey - which is the only Muslim country where we're allowed to play - people come all the way from Iran, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan just to see us. These are enemies that are fighting each other coming to see us as one group of people. I'd say that historically the Jews and Arabs are brothers because we are all descendants of Abraham, but the conflict and the differences are so big that we've forgotten that. Discovering the fact that our music is the instrument to remind people that we are all one is shocking to me. I never imagined that blood enemies would open their eyes because of it. That's why the title of the album is All Is One."

Orphaned Land's lyrics are politically charged most of the time according to Farhi, but not from the point of taking sides. The band is committed to reflecting the political situation in their corner of the world, but they never claim to be for or against any one point of view. All Is One continues their tradition of working and writing as a collective, and if fans go back and explore Orphaned Land's lyrics from the '90s (Sahara - 1994, El Norra Alila - 1996) they'll encounter the same themes and concepts as presented today. "The music is just played better and the concepts are made stronger now."

Fans will never hear one Orphaned Land album sound like another. Some patterns on All Is One are Orphaned Land trademarks, but the band is always open to experimentation. This time out, for example, Farhi's growls are almost non-existent. In addition, the songs as a whole are catchier and shorter compared to previous outings, and more "in your face." That said, by no means has the band gone commercial. Not even close.

All Is One was mixed by the critically acclaimed Jens Bogren (Kreator, Amon Amarth, James LaBrie, Devin Townsend Project, Opeth) and was recorded in three different countries: Israel, Turkey and Sweden. Ironically, countries that are Jewish, Muslim and Christian respectively, which strengthens the Orphaned Land message of unity through music. Over 40 musicians were used to flesh out the sound of All Is One, including 25 choir singers and eight classical violin, viola and cello players from Turkey. Farhi, for his part, considers All Is One "the greatest album we've made to date."

"We felt that we've done very complex albums in the past, we've proven that we know how to be the most complex band in the world if we want. But this time we had the feeling that, coming from a very complex region, it's time to make an album that would be fun to do and fun for the fans to hear. A lot of the songs are very sad and tragic, but they're a little easier to digest the messages in the lyrics. We wanted to make an album that's easy for any metal fan to understand the lyrics from the very first listen."

"Our feeling is that we were able to bring our music to a new level on All Is One," says Farhi. "I hope the fans will feel the same way."

"This is a new band, with a new album written straight from the heart. It reflects our artistic angle and inspirations which are drawn from steampunk art and sci-fi genres, where the music as we interpret it, is theatrical, electronic and eclectic, forged to sound as the soundtrack to a dystopian future. Novembers Doom - Aphotic (2011)

Death Doom Metal From U.S.A. (Chicago, Illinois)

Novembers Doom is one of the earliest U.S. dark/death/doom metal metal bands that are still active today. The band is from Chicago, Illinois. They are currently signed to The End Records.

History

Formation and early history

Novembers Doom formed in 1989, but it was not until 1992 that Novembers Doom would receive some attention in the metal world. An early deal with Regress Records, of Italy, allowed Avantgarde Records to hear the band. This demo (Her Tears Drop) was heavy, combined with moods of darkness and despair. The two songs would lead to the release of the band’s full length debut CD, Amid Its Hallowed Mirth on Avant Garde and Nuclear Blast. Exploring and expanding, the band added female backing vocals and continued its thick, eerie brand of metal. A compilation track for Pavement Music soon followed. In 1997, Novembers Doom released the EP For Every Leaf That Falls. The album was well received, leading to favorable reviews and response worldwide. Novembers Doom has since released their second full length album Of Sculptured Ivy and Stone Flowers, with Martyr Music Group. This new offering had received rave review. Read more...
