ALBUM PREMIERE: Philadelphia thrash punks Roadkiller deliver sneering self titled EP

By: Mark Brandt

The Philly punk scene is a powerful thing. It has always been defined by house shows, heavy riffs and a dedication to the layer of crustiness that makes the city so wonderfully twisted. It should come as no surprise that this bastion of hard hitting punk rock would be a lodestone for some of the best punk rock talent in the world. Such was the case for the mysterious Australian born guitarist of California Motorhead tribute band Motorbabe, and now frontwoman of hard hitting punk thrash heavyweights, Roadkiller. When she (who shall remain nameless) flew out to visit a friend she couldn’t get enough of the punk scene and when she met a drummer who was down to jam, she realized destiny was calling.

After an initial burst of shows, Roadkiller quickly recorded their self titled debut EP, a record fated to make your ears bleed in all the right ways. This is guitar driven high energy riffage. Clearly inspired by the eighties but capable of tapping into so much more, these songs will make you want to tear shit up as you scream along to powerful choruses and nightmarish verses. Created with the goal of fusing punk, hard rock and crossover thrash whilst still remaining uniquely Roadkillerthe band is on a mission to write quality heavy music and play out as much as possible.

With dreams of constant touring and a dedication to quality songwriting, Roadkiller are more than just another punk band. We are witnessing the birth of a well oiled machine, a group who represent the magic of all the underground has been and will be.

Blending classic vibes with a modern tinge, Roadkiller are exactly the sort of band we need in 2018. Constantly punching above their weight class and sneering their way to the top of the notorious Philadelphia scene, any way you slice it, Roadkillerare out for blood.  Their self-titled debut EP will be released on November 16th 2018 and the five blistering tracks are the perfect combination of thrash, metal and punk attitude. The EP is highly recommended for fans of Megadeth, Motorhead and Exhorder.  Check it out in all its thrashing glory below

ALBUM PREMIERE: Disrule deliver riffs with more fat than Danish Bacon on sophomore "Sleep In Your Honour"

The world has many things to thank Denmark for over the years, not least its incomparable sense of style and Copenhagenis home to some of the world’s most sought-after designer brands and classic products. My kids would say the piece de resistance is Lego, however they probably haven't stepped on it with no socks on, if they had I am sure they’d change their tune haha.  Have you done it?  Hurts like fuck doesn’t it

When I was a kid the most famous Dane I was aware of other than Lurpak butter was Jan Molby, then when I got into metal, Lars Ulrich was obviously a name associated with Denmark and is arguably one of the countries most recognisable faces, reviled and loved in equal measure, when you trace the roots of Danish heavy metal he is probably top of the tree.

Hailing from Denmark, you’d be mad(s)(Mikkelson) to overlook the band DISRULE., because they are a diamond (King), a doom/stoner heads wet dream, because these guys can groove and rock out with the best of 'em. Clutch, Down, Fu Manchu and the mighty Black Sabbath all come to mind upon listening to their second recordSleep In Your Honour”and in keeping with the spirit of legendary bands such as Sabbath, it was recorded live at Dead Rat Studio in just two days.

Streaming in full today exclusively, ensure you turn this one up loud(drup) with a bier (Susanne) in hand.    Sleep In Your Honour” is released this Friday via Seeing Red Records and is available HERE

ALBUM PREMIERE: Sumeru find newly discovered ferocity & deliver crushing sophomore release "Summon Destroyer"

Often in life opportunities present themselves but circumstance means that the timing just isn’t right. In the beginning as Sludgelord Records was still finding its feet, I was presented with a record that totally blew me away.  That band, Sumeruand that record, “Summon Destroyer” was something I dearly wished to support, but due to circumstances, it just wasn’t meant to be. Fortunately for me, I have been given the opportunity to do the next best thing and debut Sumeru’s new record to world ahead of its official release on October 26 through Wormhole Death Records/Aural Music(Digital/CD), Medusa Crush Records (Tape) & Mallevs Records (Tape).

A band known for their passionately fierce and ear crushing live shows, Sumeru’sonstage energy is exerted with an almost fanatical dedication that it verges on a cult-like rite of sonic exorcism and visceral upheaval. Add in the long-crafted musicianship of each member of this Sydney 5 piece, their ability to peel subconscious layers off of their audiences was apparent since their inception in 2009.

Coming some 4 years after their debut record, “Holy Lands” Sumerunow stand firmly grounded in the Australian heavy music underground as a defining force of pure riff fury and indomitable low-end groove and with new album “Summon Destroyer”, Sumeru are evermore crushing and have found a newly discovered ferocity, backed by a lyrical spirituality that seeks to take listeners minds beyond any self-imposed jurisdictions they might impose on themselves. Check out the crushing new record “Summon Destroyer” below and orders are being taken HERE. Now turn it up and let your speakers die!!

ALBUM PREMIERE: Wasted Theory put the hammer down on album #3 "Warlords of the New Electric"

Wasted Theory’s second release with Argonauta Records, after the ‘2017 edition’ CD re-release of “Defenders of the Riff,” displays a disturbingly sober vision of slammed down, heavy rock invaders. Completed in the spring of this year, “Warlords of the New Electric” was recorded, engineered, and mixed by Joseph Boldizar (Ruby The Hatchet, Ecstatic Vision, The Age of Truth)  at Retro City Studios in Philadelphia, PA.

Wasted Theory had the following to say about the record

"When we set out to write ‘Warlords of the New Electric’ we wanted to take the energy and enthusiasm of ‘Defenders of the Riff” and develop those vibes even further. In our opinion, this is the perfect companion to the last album. We didn’t want to put out the stereotypical third album where we start getting all experimental and bizarre. So, we did the exact opposite - we took our gritty rock n’ roll origins and pushed them even heavier into the material.

The riffs are harder, the fast stuff is faster and the doom stuff is doomier. This is the perfect album for those hot, sticky summer nights hanging out at your buddy’s BBQ bonfire and having way too much to drink. This album is very much a Wasted Theory album."

Argonauta will release “Warlords of the New Electric” worldwide this Friday  October 26th 2018.  The eight song, full album hammer strike will include Vinyl and CD formats, with Digital Download and today a couple days ahead of the release you can stream the record in full.  So turn in up and let your speakers die

ALBUM PREMIERE: Embrace the vile discomfort of PILLARS seismic "Onward to Nothingness"

Harnessing the powers of anguish and majesty simultaneously, PILLARS carve a tortured place in the psyche of doom and sludge with an unshakably focused assault on the senses. Harsh, brooding, and calculated, the music drags your soul through the muck and buries you, your screams a part of the choir of devastation. Sacrificing the vintage and retro flare commonplace in the genre as of late and replacing it with the vile discomfort of a forgotten past, PILLARS bring only agony and promise only torment. Prepare your grave..

"Onward to Nothingness" is the band’s first full length and is the follow up to their 2017 EP, "Pyres and Gallows". "Onwards to Nothingness" definitely shows the evolution of the band whose sound has matured to a darker and heavier aesthetic. Fans of With the Dead, Bell Witch, Conan, and doom legends Moss, will certainly embrace this offering.  Today THE SLUDGELORDexclusively brings this monumental record is full for your ears only.  Check it out below, so listen in and watch your speakers die.   "Onward to Nothingness" is available now via Seeing Red Records and can be ordered (HERE)

ALBUM PREMIERE: Ambassador deliver a cavernous and explorative musical masterwork on "Belly of the Whale"

Debut album “Belly of the Whale” by Ambassador, is a cavernous musical quest fusing heart rending doom, shoegazing aesthetics, and a deeps pop sensibility. Hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, “Belly of the Whale”, is set to drop on September 28, 2018. Eluding the stale tropes of modern rock, Ambassador evokes a sense of maturity and sonic exploration but with their emotional and vulnerable sounds remaining rooted in post rock, progressive metal and southern blues. The band has been compared to groups like Dredg, Pink Floyd and A Perfect Circle, featuring introspective and ethereal lyrics supported by concise grooves all defined by an ominous sense of melody. Each composition exposes new colours and textures with its own distinct energy and today at THE SLUDGELORDwe’re proud to be able to premiere this truly one of a kind record, check it out in full below and you can order it now (HERE)

ALBUM PREMIERE: Hessian take cues from the old guard of classic rock and deliver "Mercenary Retrograde"

On September 14th 2018, HESSIAN will release their new album “Mercenary Retrograde”.

It took five years for Hessian to get their Bachelor of Black Arts, now it’s time to accept their Master’s diploma. The Portland, Maine-based heavy metal band garnered a substantial amount of recognition for their EP and debut album - including a coveted spot as Fenriz’s Band of the Week.

Mastermind Angus McFarland oversaw every stage, from sitting at the kitchen counter studying heavy metal harmonies of “the Old Ones of heavy metal” to touring nationally and playing festivals in Sweden and the UK. After a complete upheaval in line-up, Hessian are now ready with their second album “Mercenary Retrograde”.

“The title of the album reflects the history of the band at the time of writing. Mercenary because the band consisted of hired guns, and Retrograde because we are always looking back to the Old Ones of heavy metal for inspiration.”

While Thin Lizzy are held in exceptionally high regard around Camp Hessian, there’s appreciation for any of the old guard in early metal and heavy rock - even some thrashier material as well
Hessian have been through the wringer, but perseverance and a wholehearted belief in heavy metal have allowed them to prevail. “Mercenary Retrograde” is a triumphant record that looks proudly at the past and future simultaneously. ALBUM PREMIERE: Sweden's Wheel in the Sky deliver epic sophomore "Beyond The Pale"

On Friday 31 August 2018, Sweden’s Wheel In The Skyare certain to turn some heads with new album, 'Beyond The Pale', a concept album about darkness and death. Formed in 2014, their urge to create something ostentatious and grand in scale was conceived.  Debut album “Heading For The Night”, was  eight tracks of pure rock energy combined with the fury and drug-induced psychosis of sixties garage. Spiced with the anger of punk, the haunting sadness of post-rock and the epic sounds of seventies classic rock.

Fast forward to the present and now almost 3 years later Wheel in the Sky’s journey continues with an album that overflows with melody and a dark gothic energy, while tracks such as 'Burn Babylon Burn' and 'The Only Dead Girl in the City' also contain catchy pop hooks.  More importantly Wheel In The Skytells stories and “'Beyond The Pale'” is certain to take you on a journey and today at THE SLUDGELORD were offering you the chance to take that journey with us as we premiere the album in full below.  Orders are being taken HERE

ALBUM PREMIERE & INTERVIEW: Los Angeles sludge masters Ancient Altar return

Hailing from Los Angeles, the land of the unrelenting sun, Ancient Altar’s combination of crushing doom and stirring melody packs a weighty emotional punch that few bands can match. Since the release of their last album “Dead Earth” nearly 3 years ago, a devastating album featuring those classic Sabbath worship riffs, mixed with a side order of gnarly sludge and agonised vocals, Ancient Altar has gone through somewhat of overhaul both in terms of their line up and their overall sound. The band is now a three piece featuring bassist Scott Carlson and guitar player Barry Cavener splitting vocal duties, along with drummer Geoff Summers and whilst the slow burning doom/sludge sound remains, their new record “Cosmic Purge/Foie Gras” released today hints at a more traditional doom approach and even features more melodic vocal lines.

So after a 3 year absence, it is gives me great pleasure to welcome Ancient Altar back to THE SLUDGELORD, as I recently hooked up with guitarist/vocalist Barry Cavener and bass/vocalist Scott Carlson to chat shit, talk about their history, influences, their new album and what the future holds for the band.  Oh less we forget, before you dig into the interview, you can also stream their new album “Cosmic Purge/Foie Gras” below.  You’re welcome.

Guys, welcome to THE SLUDGELORD, the new album rules, but before we get to that. Can you give us an insight into how you started playing music, leading up to the formation of Ancient Altar?

Barry: We’ve all taken different paths to get us where we are, but as far as the formation of Ancient Altar, it was birthed from the ashes of Iron Mtn. Scott, Bill, and myself had gotten to point where we felt Iron Mtn had reached its logical conclusion, so along with our drummer at the time Tom, we started Ancient Altar.

After our first album and a tour, Bill moved to Seattle, we parted ways with Tom, and Etay and Jesse joined the band. This is when things started to pick up for us. We toured a bunch, recorded “Dead Earth” with Toshi Kasai, and had the opportunity to play Psycho California. Building on the momentum from all of that, we made the trek up to Oakland, CA to record with the Evil Wizard of Rock, Greg Wilkinson. It’s during this 4 day session that we recorded what has become our latest album, “Cosmic Purge/Foie Gras”.

Since the recording, Jesse and Etay have moved on, we’re now a three piece with the addition of Geoff Summers from Batillus on Drums, and we’re currently writing for our next album.

For folks unfamiliar with your band, are there any bands on the scene past and present that you would use as a reference point to describe your band, and who or what continues to inspire you and push you to try new things?

Scott:  Individually, we’d say that Jesse is influenced by bands like Elder, Etay likes more of the straight ahead doom such as Corrupted, Barry is greatly influenced by Drive Like Jehu, and Scott counts Iron Maiden as one of his biggest influences.  In the past, people have compared us to Neurosis, Yob, and Kylesa. The direction that we’ve gone with this album and beyond is to incorporate somewhat of a traditional doom element, specifically with Barry’s vocals.  For lack of a better reference, think Candlemass. In terms of what brings about inspiration and desire to try something new, that not only comes naturally to all of us, but also personnel changes can’t help but to modify in terms of musical approach, sensibility, etc.

What can you tell us about your new record “Cosmic Purge/Foie Gras” and where do you feel it sits within the context of current doom scene?

Barry: Lyrically, the album comes from a place of helplessness as far as humanity’s place in the universe. We struggle against ourselves and each other, but the inevitability of the loss of control over our own lives is something that we only think about in a passing sense. No one wants to talk about their mortality, and grasping certain universal truths seems to be something that people would rather ignore.

“Cosmic Purge talks about the theoretical “Reverse Big Bang”, which to me represents a complete cleansing of absolutely everything that has ever been, so that the universe can start over again. It serves as a warning to pay attention to the world around you, because it can end at a moment’s notice.

“Foie Gras” is about when we create something as a society and it turns on you. You can view it from a Sci-fi point of view where we create an Artificial Intelligence that ends up ruling over humanity, but I think it works extremely well in the context of who and what we create as a society and how inevitably it comes back to bite us in the ass. You can see this first hand in the political monsters we as a society have created, and how they’ve turned on us.

To be perfectly honest, we don’t spend a whole lot of time thinking about how our music fits into the doom scene.  We’re just trying to make music that we feel strongly about, and if it does or doesn’t work with a scene is secondary to feeling good about our creative output. One thing we do appreciate about the doom scene currently though is that the genre of doom is much less of a narrow definition than what it used to be.  Everyone from Khanate to SubRosa is considered doom.  It’s good to be considered part of a genre with less dogma than some of the other types of music out there.

Does anything spring to mind when you think about the completion of your new record and how is the mood in the camp at present?

Scott: We’re just excited for people to finally hear this. It’s been a long, hard battle in many ways to get to where we currently are.  Personal issues, line up issues, any various other factors have made it even more of an uphill battle than it usually is, but that makes our resolve and commitment all the more important, and the achievements even more satisfying than they’d normally be.  Also, we’ve changed our sound quite a bit since our last release, and we’re looking forward to having a more current representation of our sound out there for people to hear.

Barry: We’re all really excited about the prospects of what’s to come.  We’re in the middle of writing for our next album, we’re playing some amazing shows, and we’ve got this album coming out that we’re really proud of
.

What stands out as your overarching memory from the recording sessions?

Barry: The bonding experience of spending four days working on nothing but the culmination of all of our hard work is the best memory, in addition to getting out of town to record, and also spending so much time with Greg and his wife Fern were all great aspects of the creation of this recording.

With you new record in the bag, how is your schedule shaping up over the next 12 months?

Scott: We are currently working on new material, with hopes of recording a new album before the end of the year, to be released next year.  With the challenge of balancing members’ schedules, it sometimes makes shows and tours challenging, but as always we plan to play locally and tour as much as is possible within the next year.

Finally, do you have any last words?

Scott: We definitely want to say thanks to anyone giving us a listen, and also a sincere thanks to THE SLUDGELORD for always having our back, and for all the hard work they put into what they do.  Jesse and Etay, who are no longer in the band but are still considered family, deserve a big amount of recognition as well for what they did to get us to the point we’re at.  Thanks to everyone who’s supported us up to the point.  Please buy our stuff.  Being in a band is a money pit.

“Cosmic Purge/Foie Gras” is released on their own label Transcendental Records and is available via their bandcamp here.  A vinyl release will be issued via Black Voodoo Records later this summer.

ALBUM PREMIERE & REVIEW: Phantom Winter, "Into Dark Science"

By: Ernesto Aguilar

Album Type: Full length
Date Released: 02/03/2018
Label: Golden Antenna Records

From the opening chords of "The Initiation Of Darkness," Phantom Winter create an experience that grinds into you relentlessly and the results are truly phenomenal.  You'll be thankful for this experience, harrowing though it may be.

"Into Dark Science"CD//DD//LP track listing

1. The Initiation Of Darkness
2. Ripping Halos From Angels
3. Frostcoven
4. The Craft And The Power Of Black Magic Wielding
5. Into Dark Science
6. Godspeed! Voyager

The Review:

Following 2016's well-received "Sundown Pleasures," German sludge/doom crew Phantom Winterrejoin the living in 2018 on its latest. Its six-song "Into Dark Science" are hereby your reminder that doom and sludge, like cold brew coffee, are best served pure and without flourish.

The subtle beauty of Phantom Winter's music has always been its truth in vision. It stands out because it isn't preening with the idea of being something more exceptional that a doom group. They do not need to: the performance is so unique and powerful that its presence is all that is necessary. Such focus on craft is freeing. What's more the sheer quality of the musicianship virtually guarantees that the band does not require a hyphenate sort of marketing. Instead, Phantom Winter, from the opening chords of "The Initiation Of Darkness," creates an experience.

"Into Dark Science" is effective because of its claustrophobic soundscapes and baleful vocals. Storytelling is very much part of this mood; Phantom Winter shares its lyrics with fans, and its misanthropic vignettes are certain to sit with you for awhile. "No god can help you here, no sun will ever shine," goes "Frostcoven." "We are usurpers of the night… the ghosts who haunt us scream in pain." " The Initiation Of Darkness " crashes against your head in fits and starts, with words inspired by poet Sylvia Plath and activist Adrienne Rich. "Ripping Halos From Angels" throbs with Full of Hell-style abandon. "The Craft And The Power Of Black Magic Wielding" sets a mood and grinds it into you relentlessly. In all, these are seem disparate, but share common bonds, sonically and lyrically. The results are truly phenomenal.

As you come to the album's conclusion, Phantom Winter present more of that harsh edge of doom it presented earlier. Broken-glass vocals and a tumultuous guitar sequence will leave you spellbound. You'll be thankful for this experience, harrowing though it may be.

"Into Dark Science" is available to preorder/buy here
