ALBUM REVIEW: Forming The Void, "Rift"

By: Charlie Butler

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 17/08/2018
Label: Kozmik Artifactz

Forming The Void channel the best of Monster Magnet through a heavy psychedelic doom filter, alternating between massive riffs and passages of cosmic grandeur

“Rift” CD//DD//LP track listing:

1). Extinction Event
2). On We Sail
3). Arcane Mystic
4). Transient
5). Arrival
6). Ark Debris
7). Shrine

The Review:

It’s hard not to get excited by an album cover that depicts a woolly mammoth jumping over a mountain in space. Fortunately the contents of Forming The Void’snew LP “Rift” deliver on these weighty cosmic expectations.

The Louisiana quartet waste no time getting down to business with the crushing groove of “Extinction Event’. The track channels the best of Monster Magnet through a heavy psychedelic doom filter, alternating between massive riffs and passages of cosmic grandeur.  This is a trick Forming The Void hone to perfection over the course of “Rift”. The middle section of the album finds the band recreating the thunderous majesty of self-titled LP era Torche, particularly the monstrous opening to “Arrival” and the smouldering sky-kissing solo that rounds off “Transient”.

“Ark Debris” and “Shrine” provide a powerful end to the album with Forming The Void at their slowest and most hypnotic. The former is a particularly absorbing slow-motion voyage into the beyond with huge, lush layers of sound giving way to bursts of triumphant doom. These tracks particularly highlight the importance the production plays in the success of this record. Chris Munson’s recording has captured the interstellar scale of these compositions with the smoothness of a classic rock or prog album but with more than enough dirt that no-one forgets this is a doom album at heart.

“Rift” is a strong collection from Forming The Void. These massive tracks sound like they could take the band to a wider audience while maintaining enough low end crunch to satisfy underground riff aficionados.

RECORDS OF THEIR YEARS...with James Marshall & Thomas Colley from Forming The Void

In a genre creaking under the weight of its own familiarity Forming The Void have built something exceptional that stands apart from most of their peers.  ‘Relic’ their sophomore effort is a record that will long outlast its creators and live on, forming the foundations, of future sludge-monuments. So with such high praise, it was no small effort for the band to follow that up that album, but they have seemingly done the impossible and managed to equal if not surpass “Relic” with their magnificent new album “Rift".  From outset Forming The Void, have harvested the dense power of bands such as The Abominable Iron Sloth, with riffs that could level buildings and yet remain commercially accessible with a rich tapestry of contemporary influences to their sound that includes Baroness, Torche, Soundgarden.

Forming The Void’s new record “Rift” is one of the standout albums of the year and with the album set to drop via Kozmik Artifactz on the 17th August 2018, we invited guitarist/ vocalist James Marshall and drummer Thomas Colley to discuss their musical journey and choose the “Records of Their Years”.  Check it out below

SL: Favourite album from the year you were born?

Marshall: Faith No More , "The Real Thing" (1989), Mike Patton is the man, not much else to say.

Thomas: Led Zeppelin, "In Through The Out Door"(1979),  This is kind of a divisive album, but I love it. And LZ is the best band ever, so there's that too

SL: First record you bought with your own money?

Marshall: Metallica – “The Black Album”. My brother got me into Metallica pretty young. He had a bunch of tapes and Metallica was the first band that I really took to.

Thomas : Aerosmith – “Pump”. I pretty much learned to play drums along to that album.

SL: Favourite non metal / rock album?

Marshall: Fleet Foxes – “Self Titled”. This one took some thought and I realized I don't listen too much outside of rock and metal much anymore.

Thomas : “The Very Best Of Otis Redding"I really love anything Stax but I had to pick one album so this is it. In terms of musical influences Al Jackson Jr. is my #2, right behind John Bonham. Just a huge pocket and could groove like nobody's business.

SL: Album that most disappointed you?

Marshall: Obviously as a big Metallica fan who actually dug the “Load” and “Reload” albums, I wanted “St. Anger” to be so much more. And it just wasn't.

Thomas: Most recently I think “Infestissumam”by Ghost. “Opus Eponymous” and “Meliora” are terrific though. I guess it might have been the dreaded sophomore slump.

SL: Favourite album of all time or if you prefer album (s) you’d run back into a burning building to rescue

Marshall: Clutch – “Self titled”pretty much stays in rotation for me all the time.

Thomas: Led Zeppelin – “Physical Graffiti” and, Free – “Fire & Water”. The best album by my favorite band, and my favorite album of all time. Is it weird that my favorite album ever is not by my favorite band ever? Anyway, I really can't quantify how much these albums mean to me so I'm grabbing both.

SL:Favourite album (s) of 2018?

Marshall: Spaceslug - "Eye the Tide", Sandrider - "Armada", the new Conan and Clutch albums will be on there without a doubt as well.

Thomas:  So far, Sun Voyager- "Seismic Vibes"

SL:..And finally The last album you bought?

Marshall: "Threshold" by Age of Truth

Thomas: Skull Mountain double LP compilation.

The End

“Rift” is available via Kozmik Artifactz on the 17th August 2018 and you can check out the video for “On We Sail” below

ALBUM REVIEW: Somali Yacht Club - "The Sea"

By: Victor Van Ommen

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 28/01/2018
Label: Robustfellow |
Kozmik Artifactz

Basking in sonic emersion and drawing from an Elder influence, Somali Yacht Club succeeds in taking the listener on that well-known ride of warm tones and meandering melodies. In the world of progressive psych-rock, confidence is key and these Ukranians hold that key and open every door with it that they can.

“The Sea” CD//DD//LP track listing:

1. Vero
2. Religion Of Man
3. Blood Leave A Trail
4. Hydrophobia
5. 84 Days
6. Crows

The Review:

Rolling down the road from the musical hotbed that is Eastern Europe, Somali Yacht Club gives 2018 one of its first releases. Released on January 28th, the new album, “The Sea,” follows the band’s preceding output rather seamlessly in both name and sound alike. Musically, “The Sea” is a logical next step. Sonically, it’s the sure-footed performance and the resulting vibe that these tunes exude that makes the album what it is. In the world of progressive psych-rock, confidence is key and these Ukranians hold that key and open every door with it that they can.

If you were to put on “The Sea” and close your eyes, you’d be taken away by the music. It’s all about the mood. Whether it’s the upbeat, kraut-rocking opener “Vero” or the swirling “Hydrophobia” – which takes a stoner-rocking twist there at the end, “The Sea” is an album that delivers quality psych for its full duration. Like its gorgeous cover art, “The Sea” flows gently, travels freely, and traverses many realms of the stratosphere. No single sound or melody actually stands out, but that’s ok, because the album as a whole works well. The tunes and grooves may fade to the background, but do so in such a way that they set the mood.

With “The Sea,”Somali Yacht Club tries their hand at the formula of combining heavy-prog with psychedelic, stoner riffing. Though the bar for this formula was set pretty high with Elder’s “Lore” in 2015, Somali Yacht Clubdoesn’t shy away from taking a stab at it themselves. Basking in sonic emersion and drawing from an Elder influence, Somali Yacht Club succeeds in taking the listener on that well-known ride of warm tones and meandering melodies.

LABEL INTENSIVE: Introducing Kansas City's finest, this is The Company

The Companyis a specialist DIY label based out of Kansas City, whose vision for the label was to put the spotlight on the heavy scene in the local area. Guided by the long term mentor, Steve STB, The Company founder Josh Wilkinson known for his design work for boutique stoner doom label  STB Records  took a leapt of faith and would release the debut from local boys Keef Mountainon vinyl, thus the label was born and with it, another top class label issuing albums lauded by the underground scene but seemingly ignored by the big boys.

Now with five vinyl releases behind them, I took the opportunity to fire some questions at them, in order to get low down on this unique and high class label. "Welcome to The Company".

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

My name is Joshua Wilkinson. I have lived in the Kansas City Metropolitan area for 95% of my life, the other 5% being Omaha, NE. I have an associates degree in Graphic Design, and currently daylight as an employee for a Large Format print shop here in KC. I’ve done design work some of the following bands: Hossferatü, Merlin, Druglord, Red Wizard, Crown of Thornz, Bright Curse, Eternal Black, Custom Black, Olde, Sinister Haze, Goya, Ancient Warlocks, Joel Grind, Doctor Doom, Fistula, Year of the Cobra, Geezer, and The Watchers, just to name a “few”. I also handle the majority of design, and marketing for my label.

What inspired you to start a record label?

I started realizing how many good bands there were in KC, and I felt like they needed to be heard outside of the midwest. Originally the idea was to do a single 7” or Flexi to sell on The Companys website to draw attention to my design services. I never had any intention to start a label; I just wanted to sell something different that other designers weren't offering. I approached my favorite KC band, Keef Mountain, and they were into the idea completely. As some of you may know, I handle most of the design work over at STB Records, so when I mentioned the idea to Steve from STB, he was the one who pushed me to go the full distance and release a full length. I invited the Keef boys over to my house, I laid my plan out to them, and they jumped aboard. So that was the beginning of The Company as a record label.

What are some of the difficulties you have faced and currently face?

Money and time. I can confidently say those are the only 2 road blocks I’ve faced in my short experience. I could always use another 8 hours in my day. With my day job, my main design and label hours are limited to the evenings and weekends, but I’m always working things over in my head, or communicating throughout the day regarding design and label stuff. It never gets “shut off”.

What would you describe as The Company’s 'vision' or 'philosophy'?

My main vision was to put a spotlight on KC and its incredibly talented heavy scene. The metal scene, the punks, the unbelievable Hardcore scene we have out here, whatever. I personally am more into the “stoner” side of things so I chose to focus first and foremost on those bands because I feel like I can market them honestly, because I’m also a fan. I would never release an album that I personally wouldn't listen to. This is strictly a labor of love.

Are there other labels that have inspired you? Other labels you think people should look into?

STB and Poisoned Mind Records, hands down. Steve from STB has been my mentor since day 1. He took a huge chance on me, took me on as his lead designer without ever having met me, and really taught me a lot along the way. He pushed me, made me challenge myself a lot, and taught me a great deal about the business along the way. Same with Tom from Poisoned Mind, he’s my bud! (What up Tommy!) I used to do most of their design work as well, so Tom and I used to (and still do) bounce ideas off each other all the time. Those guys are both huge inspirations to me, and great friends. On a much bigger, much different level, I’m incredibly inspired by Relapse Records of course. I’m mostly inspired by their ability to market a vast array of genres and stay relevant for so many years. That’s something I’d like to see The Companydo, is sorta branch out and reach a broader audience.

Tell us about some of The Company’s earlier releases you think people may have slept on?

If you’re not listening to Hyborianyet, I would very highly recommend checking them out. They’ve put out such a phenomenally talented and extremely well written record. They recorded the whole thing themselves in their practice space. It’s a true DIY recording but if you didn't know any better you'd think it was recorded in a giant studio. It’s massive. I get nothing but positive comments about them. They're some of the hardest working dudes in the game and some of the most talented people I’m privileged to call friends.. Mark my words: They are going to go far in this business. I Love those dudes like brothers.

Keef Mountain, our first release, is one of my favorite bands, and 2 of my favorite people on earth. The Company, as a label, wouldn’t exist if it weren't for them. The album itself fucking RULES! If you like Sleep, or the Melvins, then you’ll very likely be into this album. It’s a fun record. Another one that was completely recorded DIY by Alex Tunks (Inner Altar, Blindside USA) in a bar basement. The cavernous surrounding gives it a huge sound.

A lot of people know Curse the Son, but I don't think a lot of people realized we released the album, because a lot of them we’re expecting it to be released by STB. That’s another album I recommend. They're the only band on the label who isn't from the midwest, but they're part of my STB family, and the album is so god damn good, I had to push myself to do that one. It’s reminiscent of Electric Wizard style stoner/doom, but to me there’s a big Seattle/grunge influence to the record, especially the vocals. I always say it’s like If Alice in Chains had started a Sabbath worship band.

What upcoming releases are you most excited about?

I’m really excited about Snowchilds‘Age of Change’ which was well received when it was released digitally so I’m pumped on that one. Snowchild is from Wichita, KS which is a couple hours south of KC. For those that aren't aware, Kozmik Artifactz will also be doing a pressing of that album as well with different colors and packaging so stay tuned for that. Kozmik always has bad ass releases! After that I’m co-releasing Youngblood Supercultsexceptional new album “The Great American Death Rattle” with DHU Records. Another midwestern band, YBSC hails from Topeka, KS. The albums great, and has a lot of emotion felt on the recording. The addition of Brad Morris on bass and his contribution to the song writing made a huge impact on their sound, for the better of course. I swear to god I get goosebumps everytime I hear Davids voice. That guys a true vocalist. Weston brings “stoned and steady” drumming, and Bailey just fuckin’ shreds it! So other than that, we’ve also got plans to work with some other great KC area bands, Inner Altar being the one I’m most excited for.

Tell us about some of the newer bands on The Company roster.

One of my favorite bands in the world, Inner Altar, just got done demoing their new album, so hopefully we’ll get a full length from them in the near future. Inner Altar features members of Keef Mountain, Blindside USA, No Class, Altered Beast, and Blood Shaman. They're kinda like Demon Head, or early Witchcraftwith a KC twist. Their two first tapes are some of my favorite music ever written. Check them out.

Gnarly Davidsonhas been part of The Company crüe for a while now but I don't think they got the attention they deserve. They hail from Lawrence, KS and are a three piece who play LOUD fuzzy stoner metal. We re-released a tape they recorded on the fourth of July. They recorded one side sober, and then re-recorded side b after they had gotten drunk. We’ve still got some of those tapes available. I hope to work with them again in the future, they rule.

If you could have released any record past or present, what would it be and why?

Inner Altar: “Vol 1” + “Vol 2”… Did I mention I love Inner Altar?

What does the future of The Company look like, from your perspective?

I’d like to see it become as big as possible. Its hard running this thing while maintaining a steady day job, but I bust my ass so I hope it pays off someday. I would at the very least like to look back and say that I was part of not only KCs music scene, but the whole Stoner/Doom community in general.

ALBUM REVIEW: Geezer - “Psychoriffadelia”

By: Ernesto Aguilar

Album Type: Full Length
Date released: May 19, 2017
Label:Kozmik Artifactz |
STB Records

Guttural guitars and raunchy drums at the ready. Geezer delivers the intensity of the Melvins, one of the group's inspirations, while giving its own unique spin to stoner rock. While many others try, this is one band that is confident enough to step out and truly make this sound their own.

“Psychoriffadelia” CD//DD//LP track listing:

1. Hair Of The Dog
2. Stressknots
3. Psychoriffadelia
4. Red Hook
5. Dirty Penny

The Review:

If you're honest about it, you must admit it is hard to get excited about a band whose first cut on its album is a cover of Nazareth's "Hair of the Dog." It is a fantastic song, of course, but just about every bar band in America and beyond has beaten the joy out of it long ago. If we're being mercenary about such an issue, who isn't sick of it? Don't lie. We've all made those judgments before.

It is a great then that Kingston, New York trio Geezer are so tight elsewhere, because you'll quickly forgive them and enjoy the heavy bluesy jams of their latest five-song release.

Geezerhas been prolific, dropping six releases thus far and touring as well as doing regional live shows quite heavily. Such experience makes the band incredibly competent at sustaining the energy on songs like "Dirty Penny" – guttural guitars and raunchy drums at the ready. Geezer delivers the intensity of the Melvins, one of the group's inspirations, while giving its own unique spin to stoner rock. While many others try, this is one band that is confident enough to step out and truly make this sound their own.

Geezeris at its best at points like the title track, where members Richie, Turco and Pat feed off of one another and simply let the chemistry take over. It is remarkable how well they blend even on songs like "Red Hook," without a doubt the most unusual song on the release. It contains a slightly country blues and heavy rock vibe that may not grab Geezer's traditional audience, but the musicianship is so effective here you will not notice the difference much. In fact, you will quite likely be nodding along.

By the time "Psychoriffadelia" wraps, that potentially rough start will be but a distant memory. Instead you will remember one of the more entertaining bands around.

ALBUM REVIEW: Devil Electric - "Devil Electric"

By: Ernesto Aguilar

Album Type: Full-length
Date Released: 11/08/2017
Label: Kozmik Artifactz

Although you'll not find a swerve or anything wildly disparate, Devil Electric is nonetheless entrancing. In particular, the group is guaranteed to energize any fan of heavy blues reminiscent of Black Sabbath, The Allman Brothers and similar bands.

“Devil Electric” CD//DD//LP track listing:

1. Monologue (Where You Once Walked)
2. Shadowman
3. Lady Velvet
4. Acidic Fire
5. Monolith
6. The Dove & The Serpent
7. The Sacred Machine
8. Lilith
9. Hypnotica

The Review:

What is edgy rock music today? Such classifications are quite debatable, given where rock has meandered since the 1990s. Going from hard rock and beyond, sometimes comparisons are at best awkward and at worst ill conceived. Hence the contemporary metal fan might not classify Melbourne, Australia's Devil Electric as anywhere near the genre. Nevertheless its sludge influences are on full display on the quartet's self-titled debut.

And what a debut it is. Although you'll not find a swerve or anything wildly disparate, Devil Electric is nonetheless entrancing. In particular, the group is guaranteed to energize any fan of heavy blues reminiscent of Black Sabbath, The Allman Brothersand similar bands. In strains of "Lilith"you can hear Sabbath's "Hand of Doom." In "Hypnotica"you can get glimpses of Rainbow, among others. However, Devil Electric is not simply a homage or a tribute. Instead, it creates something very much up to date.

Devil Electric's premiere is exemplary much on the strength of singer Pierina O'Brien. Her presence and command of the material holds the listener's attention throughout this nine-song journey. With "Shadowman" and a few other songs, O'Brien is able to stretch out her vocals and add remarkable contours to the track. A precious few artists, such as Ute Plotkin of Aranya, come to mind as having this singular sort of charisma. And although O'Brien's specific singing range is not markedly expansive, she does quite a lot on these songs.

A sound like this does not succeed without a muscular rhythm section. And Devil Electric is fortunate enough to have bassist Tom Hulse and drummer Mark Van De Beek on hand to provide the sort of snap that guitarist Christos Athanasias needs to do his meaty best. Needless to say, while O'Brien is talented, it is the compliment of the rest of the group that helps trot out the best on this debut release.

11 IS ONE LOUDER: Hair of the Dog drummer Jon Holt discusses his Top 5 Skateboarding clips

On 20/07/2017, hotly tipped Psych Rockers, Hair of the Dog returned with “This World Turns”, their third studio album and their most experimental and adventurous album to date.  As with previous albums, “This World Turns” acts as a snapshot of the bands life experiences, but this time it focuses on themes of maturity, responsibility and reflection

Psychedelic Blues, classic rock, hard Rock all are present and correct, harking back to memories of when Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Led Zepp and certain Black Sabbathruled the airwaves. Indeed if you dig the classic guitar sound of the 70s then you’re going to be in luck, because Hair of the Dog (a nod to Scottish classic rock band, Nazarethand a cheeky wink to the trio’s indulgent drinking habits) has you covered.  “This World Turns” sees Hair of the Dogyet again crank up the intensity and maturity of their sound to deliver an album that is truly of another world.  The tone of the record is undeniably loud and heavy, but incorporates an atmosphere which is vibrant, full of energy and represents a band with a very bright future indeed.

Today with the album but a few days old in the ether of doom, we invited drummer Jon Holt, to kick back and talk about another of his great passions skateboarding, as we as we take our weekly trip into the extreme and turn the volume all the way up to 11.“This World Turns” is available here

Heavy music and skateboarding have been in my life for a long time. Both go hand in hand with each other. Both are outsiders, both are aggressive, both like to have a good time. Combined in a video part, music and skateboarding can create a visual and aural Gama bomb of awesomeness which will get you hyped to do almost anything; jam with your band, shred a curb or just get the hoovering done finally. So read my brief appetisers watch the links and then grab your Dyson and get some!

Arto Saari

The first and last parts of a skate video are the biggies. And Starting us off with an absolute banger at number 5 is the first part from Es year 2000 classic Menikmati.  The skater is Arto Sarri. The song is “Testing” by CKY. On the most basic of analytical levels you could just say that this video part is absolutely insane and be done with it. The energy of the skating matches the energy of the song perfectly. Arto comes out swinging and goes for death on numerous occasions. The instrumental smash to the senses that CKYdeliver with “Testing” almost sounds how skateboarding feels like. On a deeper level I feel that this part represents the underdog. Sarri was then and always will be a skateboarder’s skater but at the time he was not as big a name as some of his Flip and Es teammates such as Tom Penny, Geoff Rowley and Sir Eric of Koston. And then there’s CKYwho will always be synonymous with a certain Jackass. But with this video part Sarri and CKYclaim a rightfully deserved glory. Sarri definitely received the recognition he deserved after it came out and went on to become one of skateboarding’s most respected skaters.

It’s a blue collar video part; you can tell Sarri worked hard for it. Cried tears of frustration, sweat buckets and bled for it. CKY would not have had much in the way of creative input into the part if any, however I am sure that they would have been hyped that the song was used in this part which is now deemed as a classic in its own right. As much as the part is a violent and aggressive piece of skateboarding, the upbeat nature of the track gives the whole thing a celebratory feel and you can’t help but get swept up in the infectious energy of both skater and song. And that is what happens why skateboarding and rock music collide. A classic part from a classic era of skateboarding.

Greyson Fletcher

We bid a fond farewell to the silky skills of 2000 era Es street skating and say hello sailor to the bearded bowl basher himself, Mr Greyson Fletcher. This is his first Pro part for Elements called, “In Perdition” which was released in October 2015. It begins with the ominous sounds of darkness as Fletcher floats in and out of a vast concrete monolithic snake run. The drone then gives way to riffs, riffs provided by Bolt Thrower. Yes, please! Now whereas with Sarri and CKYthe marriage shouldn’t work but does, here with Greyson Fletcher and Bolt Throweryou have a perfect natural match. Fletchers style can be simply described as controlled chaos. Not the most technical wizard ever to roll on four wheels but there is no denying that he knows some dark arts. Some of the skating in this video part is literally death defying. He defies death. Straight up looks death in the eyes and says, “Not today death, old buddy, old pal! I have some more one foot ollies to knock out before we’ll be seeing each other!” It is a heavy, heavy part with a crushing soundtrack and the whole thing makes you want to crack a cold beer grab your board and go realise you’re not Greyson Fletcher.

Chad Fernandez

For those who don’t know, this is how it works; you watch a skate video for the skater or the team that you like and for the skating you know will be insane. You hear the songs and you either know them and think nice choice or you don’t know them and think, who the bloody hell is that? That song is fucking awesome sausages. This is how it went down with my next choice; Chad Frenandez’s part from Globe’s Opinion. This video features the master stroke of White Zombie’s “Thunder Kiss 65” as a fittingly crusty soundtrack to the crusty but stylish manoeuvres of Mr Frenandez. I could probably just stop writing here and let you click the link, as this part just needs to be seen and heard. However, I shall impart this advice on to thee instead; “Thunder Kiss 65” is now a personal classic of mine and that style of rock or metal is what I listen to the most. This is all because of this skate video part. To be honest if I think about it, this skate part can really take the credit for being a musical seed in my inner consciousness. Which evolved over the years into darker and heavy matter. Without this part there would be no White Zombie and therefore I’d never know what stoner rock was and then never care to listen to Downand Panteraand then look back to their ancestors in Zeppelin and Sabbath and then we would never have Hair of the Dog…so really without skateboarding and this video part there would be no band for which I am writing this top 5 to promote on social media…mind blown…So, don’t make that mistake! Watch this video part and bang your head along to the early stoner riffs which can open the doors to the whole kingdom of riffery!

Riley Hawk

Penultimate rocking skate part goes to Riley Hawk and his part in Transworld Skateboarding’s 26th full length skate video, “Outliners” released in August 2015. It’s a modern part but Riley Hawks style and musical tastes mean it is steeped in retro fuzzery and riffs for days. Those riffs are provided by Sacri Monti, a band I did not know of until I watched this part back in 2015. After a quick google and a search on my music streaming platform of choice, I have their album at my fingertips and I can say this to those bothering to read this that it’s a beast. It’s trippy and fuzzy but also knows when to be slow and heavy. Go find out about the band and give their self-titled album a listen. I do not obviously know for sure but I can imagine Hawk chose this song himself. He has used Sabbath in previous parts and other retro or actual 70’s stoner rock type tunes. He looks like a guitarist in a 70’s rock band and IS actually the guitarist in a band which plays retro rock called Petyr, as yet not released on my music streaming platform unfortunately but I will be looking out for them! The part is a solid, shredders gnar fest. It feels hot and dusty just like the song and Hawk blasts through difficult trick after insane mind bender like he was just ollying up a curb. He is definitely one of my favourite modern skaters. For his skill, his style, his musical influences and humble persona. This part is a prime example of the new guard tipping the hat the the old guard but at the same time progressing forward into the future of both skateboarding and rock music.

Geoff Rowley

Last but by no means least - because basically you can just forget everything I have just written and all the other videos I have made you watch and just press play on this last one cause it’s the fucking best thing ever – is Mr Geoff Rowley. It’s not a part as such but an advertisement; an Airwalk ad (remember when Airwalks were everywhere!) This is mid to late 90’s footage which I first saw in a 411 video I had when I was around 13 or 14. I had just started skateboarding and 411 was a VHS magazine which opened our naive Aberdeenshire dwelling eyes to what skateboarding was over in its spiritual home of California. This 30 second clip of Geoff Rowley was all I needed to consolidate what I already suspected; I fucking love skateboarding and I fucking love a good heavy riff on a guitar! In those 30 seconds it not only conveys more danger, rebellion and cool as fuckness than all the rest of my top 5, it also makes you want to skate more or grab a guitar or start a band or just go out and fucking live more!

It’s like visual and aural coffee, when I’m not feeling it some days I’ll just watch this clip and it lifts me out of my funk. There is a heat to the footage, it’s dowsed in summertime, making you yearn for those lost adolescent days of just hanging with your mates, drinking some beers, skating and listening to good music. It is heavy music and skateboarding in perfect unison. That music is the opening riff from “Sink with Kalifornija” by Youth Brigade. The skater is Rowley. And the rest is history…
