ALBUM REVIEW: Psychedelic Witchcraft - Magick Rites and Spells"
By: Jake Wallace
Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 27/01/2017
Label: Soulseller Records
'Magick Rites and Spells' is a fresh, authentic display of classic occult rock being performed in the present day. It's a blessing to see a band who are truly absorbed in this genre, leading the way for all modern day occultists to follow. It's a very well-balanced mix of old, new and cover songs and an incredible follow-up to the masterpiece that was 'The Vision'. This band are only getting started and I'm truly excited to see what the future holds for Virginia and the guys.

The Review:
Psychedelic Witchcrafthave just brought out their latest album 'Magick Rites and Spells'. This band certainly know how to churn out songs as their last album, the critically acclaimed 'The Vision' only came out back in April, 2016.
We dive into the mystical land of the occult with 9 tracks comprising of 3 brand new tracks, 2 covers and 4 tracks from the “Black Magic Man” EP, released back in 2015.
Track 1, 'Come a Little Closer', starts the album off with some elegant, flowing guitar sounds before the main riff begins and Virginia Monti takes control, doing what she does best. Such a powerful voice which can also be toned down for those hypnotic lyrics, entrancing you as the song goes on. There's some great lead guitar work in this track too, providing just enough of a taste without overcompensating. It's a very enticing opening track and a great start to a superb album.
Track 2 is a cover of 'Godzilla' by Blue Oyster Cult. This is the first time I’ve heard a female sing this song and it sounds absolutely fantastic. I saw Blue Oyster Cult a few months back and they played this song but to be perfectly honest, Psychedelic Witchcraft do a better job than B.O.C did live. It's also very refreshing seeing a couple covers. A lot of bands have strayed away from covering songs in recent years but when you can add your own signature touch, like these guys have, then by all means, cover that shit!
Track 3, 'Set Me Free', is a true piece of Sabbathian occult rock. Everything blends incredibly well and there's still a lot of breathing room with the guitar and bass tones so it's not total overkill. Virginia 's vocals soar over the top of some very tight riffage before a great breakdown with just drums and bass involved. This leads way to another ripping solo from Jacopo Fallai as the track comes to a close.
'Wicked Dream'is the 4th track on the album and the last of the brand new, original material that is exclusive to this release. These guys create such a dark, gloomy vibe to rock and roll but it works a treat and the visual imagery and lyrical themes all work as a cohesive unit.
'The Dark Lord'is another cover of the famous Sam Gopal song that featured Lemmyon lead vocals. It is in itself a fucking incredible song and it's so great to see recognition of it and Psychedelic Witchcraft do a superb job at doing it justice. As much as I love original material, I'd love to see these guys do a full cover album just to see what they would pick and see how Virginia can lend her voice to pretty much anything and do a fantastic job.
Track 6'Angela' is the first track taken from the “Black Magic Man” EP from 2015. This time round it sounds much more polished and it's great to see their older stuff rearing its head again. Psychedelic Witchcraft defined their style early on and they still stay true to the Coven-esque style of occult rock. There are also more current influences such as Blood Ceremony or Ruby the Hatchet who play very similar styles of music but I think Psychedelic Witchcraft are the most authentic occult-styled band.
Track 7 'Lying on Iron' is another track from the “Black Magic Man” EP. It is a beautiful, yet haunting piece of music and one of the more mellow tracks on the album. The musicianship in this band is of a very high standard and the fusion of guitar, bass and percussion is extremely affective in creating this sound. The guitar solo uses a Jimi Hendrix 'Little Wing' sounding tone and works fantastically with the backing music. There are a million ways to describe how good Virginia 's vocals are and yet again, she delivers an impeccable performance.
Track 8 'Black Magic Man' is the title track from the EP of the same name. This was one of the first Psychedelic Witchcraft songs I heard and got me into listening to them. It definitely sounds a lot fuller this time round and reminded me why I love this band. Parts of this song remind me of early 90s desert rock but tainted with a hint of darkness.
The final track on the album 'Slave of Grief' is also re-released from their debut EP. It has a very simple chord progression which is perfect for letting Virginia grab your attention with her lyrics and vocals. It slowly chugs along and opens up around the 3 min mark with another ripping, fuzzed out guitar solo. Some of the tones on this album are very thick and fuzzy and some are clean and appropriate to the style of each song. This one is steeped in that classic vintage fuzz tone. The drums are absolutely on fire towards the end of this track and it all culminates in a witch's cauldron of musical brilliance as the track fades out.
'Magick Rites and Spells'is a fresh, authentic display of classic occult rock being performed in the present day.

THE 16 MOST POPULAR ALBUMS OF 2016: The Sour 16 End of Year List 2016
The Sour 16 End of Year List 2016
Whatever is going on in the world, in our personal lives, at work and at home, music is a constant source of escapism and as one year ends and another begins, the prospect that 2017 will bring another batch of fantastic releases is a mouth watering prospect.
So, with that in mind, today we present the culmination of our efforts from 2016 and present “The Most Popular Albums of 2016” for your viewing pleasure. I hope you had as much fun checking out the new music as we did presenting it to you. I’d like to bestow an immeasurable amount of gratitude to the contributors, who made this year so awesome.
The results are compiled based on page views alone and calibrated into the list below. All reviews can be viewed by clicking the artwork and we have included album streams wherever possible. (Total views since their publication are highlighted in red).
16). Gozu - "Revival” (1753)
At their core, Gozu is a bad ass American rock band. They’ve got heavy riffs in tow and bang out tunes loud enough to piss off the neighbors. But Gozu is more than this. Gozu is a songwriting machine, one that is able to churn out eight loud, hard hitting compositions without sacrificing the meaning behind the songs or the band. Gozu’s “Revival” is gruff and dirty when it needs to be just as it’s swift and soulful when the time is right.
15). Slomatics - "Future Echo Returns" (1818)
When a band's guitarist has their own signature fuzz pedal, it's a safe bet that they can cut through solid rock with their riffs; when both guitarists have an alternate version of the same pedal then prepare your eardrums for some serious, rock crushing heaviosity. The towering heaviness of the riffs and the images of the infinite, shimmering darkness of space is executed and captured perfectly. An amazing album worthy of any and all praise it will undoubtedly receives.
14) Rob Zombie - "The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser" (1935)
Rob Zombie hits a home run with each gnarly cut, keeping the fire hot throughout. Pastor Snow was right. Rock n’ roll has a great beat. And that evil feeling you feel when you sing it? It’s a good feeling to feel!
13) Conan – “Revengeance” (1964)
The song 'Every Man Is An Enemy' has one of the most metal sounding titles I've ever heard and the violent intentions inherent in the brooding, bruising riffs put the bands money where its snarling mouth is. 'Earthenguard', the final track of the 6 on offer, is a song so heavy it has its own gravitational pull. Its 12 minutes of neanderthalic doom which also swims and swirls thanks to the phased guitars. It's an odyssey, a massive trek through mountainous chops and pounding beats that are designed to systematically cave your head in. Have Conan outdone themselves? Quite possibly.
12). Neurosis - “Fire Within Fires” (2056)
As this decade has yet to close, it's difficult to define what Neurosis are...but herein lies their beauty; you define who and what they are to you. After 30 years, these guys know what needs to go into a Neurosis record and will continue to do so until the music is finished with them.
11). Periphery- "Periphery III: Select Difficulty" (2137)
Experimental metal bands like Periphery will (hopefully) never settle for sticking to one particular groove. Constantly innovating, this adds to “Juggernaut”, jumping off from that platform and diving into dark, unexplored depths. Music should surprise and inspire, and “Periphery III: Select Difficulty” does both with eye-opening results. Just watch out for unexpected face-melting, okay?
10). Asteroid - "III" (2159)
It is a hugely diverse record and shows the advanced musicianship between the band, blending all kinds of stoner rock and fuzz. This is a band who are firmly on the rise to the top and know exactly how to get there. One of the best releases of 2016 without a doubt.
09). Dunsmuir - "Dunsmuir" (2341)
Dunsmuir, manages the uncanny trick of amounting to the sum of its parts. The record's players have some serious pedigree and none if it is wasted. Vinny Appice is as powerful as ever, with a beastly snare sound, while Bone and Davis are a formidable strings team. Fallon puts in a hardworking and uniformly stellar shift as per usual. Simply put, if you like Clutch and Dio-era Sabbath, you will be right at home here. If you are a fan of Fu Manchu, there are sounds for you here as well. This album rocks, it’s that simple.
08). Wretch – “Wretch” (2673)
This is a fine debut and a much needed shot of trad doom, with actual songs, - in an era of obsession with amps and pedals (but without, you know, actual songs and stuff). It is a triumph for this intrepid trio and surely there are great things to come for the band. Make no mistake, Wretch are here and Wretch will bring you real doom or throw you out of the bar if you don't like it.
07). Subrosa- "For This We Fought the Battle of Ages" (3040)
If you love really emotionally charged hard hitting music, give this record a listen. I had very high expectations of this record, and those expectations were met and then exceeded.
06). Meshuggah - "The Violent Sleep of Reason” (3065)
Trying to describe Meshuggah’s sound is a challenge. The only way I can put it is that they’re a musical cascade: a never-ending barrage of sound and heaviness pounding down upon you. Don’t expect or ballad or moments of levity here, this is a relentless tide which you will not escape from. Tracks like ‘MonstoCity’ and ‘Our Rage Won’t Die’ are pummelling tracks of new material which can easily be slotted in to their live setlist and not seem out of place. In fact, the same could be said for any of those songs on display here: like a chain forged by Vulcan, there’s not a weak link present. It all hits, and hits hard.
05). Gojira - "Magma”(3156)
‘Magma’ is a record that envelopes you with its overtly dark drama, but within its haze, its crushing catharcism makes it one of the most special metal records to be released in some time. It may not be the relentless assault many fans wanted from the album – and that’s not to say it is barren of those moments – yet, as a vehicle for emotional cleansing, as a eulogy and an obituary for a woman who shaped the personalities that drive this act, it is staggering.
04). Suicidal Tendencies - "World Gone Mad" (3326)
It flows in a virtually flawless manner and I do believe “World Gone Mad” will be remembered as one of their best records, ever. This one’s a home run with a bullet.
03). Blood Ceremony – “Lord of Misrule” (4006)
If you are new to Blood Ceremony, this album is as fine a place to start as any. If you have heard any of their previous albums and enjoyed them, your enjoyment of this one is guaranteed. This is as good an example as any of a band looking to the past both in terms of musical and folklore tradition to create fantastical and occult inspired music.
02). Megadeth - "Dystopia" (6616)
This line-up has introduced itself with a battering ram of thrash utopia; the riffs, the fury and the sizzling lead playing present here stands toe-to-toe with the bands best 21st century output. It’s a record which accentuates the bands relevancy in 2016. Masters of their trade just listen to ‘Lying In State’ and tell me they can’t smash shit up with the best of them. They continue to release music and make the effort to give more content for their fans to consume. Not many other bands their age can say that.
1). Alter Bridge - (20,702)
If you have any interest in the more commercial end of the rock and metal spectrum i.e. Metallica, Maiden, Soundgarden and so on then this album could be a fine intro to the band. If you are a fan already you will enjoy this one immensely. Alter Bridge are leading lights in modern rock and may well be the last of a dying breed.
A big thank you as always to our amazing writers, your dedication knows no boundaries and for that I am truly grateful. September’s “Sour 16” features reviews by: Richard Maw, Theron Moore, Dan Brownson, Jake Wallace, Phil Weller, Chris Markwell, Chris Bull & Victor Van Ommen

ALBUM REVIEW: Mother Mooch - “Nocturnes”
By: Jake Wallace
Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: Out Now
Label: Krauted Mind Records
Their blend of psychedelia with grunge and stoner rock/doom is a highly sought after formula and Mother Mooch are keeping the secret closely guarded - and rightfully so. ‘Nocturnes’ is an astounding album from a band that have the potential to conquer the world.
“Nocturnes” CD//DD//LP track listing:
1). This Tempest
2). Sinners
3). My Song 21
4). Into the Water
5). L.H.O.O.Q.
6). Misery Hill
7). Hive Mind
8). Out On the Western Plain
The Review:
Mother Mooch are a 5-piece psychedelic doom grunge outfit from Dublin , Ireland . Originally releasing their highly-acclaimed debut album ‘Nocturnes’ back in November 2015, the band have now re-released it on vinyl through Krauted Mind Records (GER) and it is a stunning album from start to end, showcasing the amazing talent bursting out of Dublin’s stoner rock scene.
Comprising of 8 tracks in total, the album has a diverse range of styles in the mixing pot. The first track, entitled ‘This Tempest’ kicks off the album and straight away you get the psychedelic grunge sound with a superbly tripped out intro that gives vocalist Chloë Ní Dhúada all she needs to give you a taste of her incredibly soulful voice. It’s an effortless display of vocal-work and becomes very hypnotising as the album progresses. The track slows down into a great jam around the 3-min mark and guitarist Sid Daly provides the flaming lead guitar work over a great grungy chord progression.
‘Sinners’ is the next track on the album which starts off with a swinging guitar riff that you could listen to all day without it losing it’s initial impact. The band make great use of this rhythm and it works extremely well with Chloë’s vocals and the subtle touches of backing vocals adding an extra layer of depth to the song. There are so many different elements coming into play with this band and just when you think you know what it sounds like, it changes ever so quickly. They have a huge slab of the Palm Desert scene in their sound with a raw Seattle grunge sound as well as the psych/stoner rock sounds of bands like Purson, Blood Ceremony or Electric Citizen.
‘My Song 21’ is the third track on the album and is probably one of their most grungy punk sounding songs. Very upbeat and packed with energy, it’s a hell of a wild ride. It’s also the shortest track on the album at 1:29 but it’s a great little blast of energy to remind you these guys can put on an action packed live show.
‘Into the Water’ is the fourth track on the album and begins with a beautiful clean sounding guitar riff. It patiently glides along while the drums and bass wrap themselves into the mix so perfectly. Yet again, Chloë’s vocals are so soulful and powerful and the entire intro section is a work of art. Then before you know it, the main riff of the song comes in and it is dripping in bluesy stoner rock goodness. The coalescence between the clean sounding passages and the main riff is incredible and they gel together perfectly to construct a truly outstanding track. Around the 3:27 mark, the track takes flight into a final wah’d out section of blasting tempos which brings it to a close.
Track 5, entitled ‘L.H.O.O.Q’ kicks off with a bang and doesn’t fuck about from the get-go. Straight away we have riffs, solos, ripping bass lines and crushing drumming. This is a total rocker and the chorus section is undoubtedly catchy. ('The Mona Lisa in your head!')
‘Misery Hill’ is track 6 on the album and yet again we’re slapped in the face with more killer riffs. The tag ‘psychedelic doom grunge’ is definitely the most accurate way of describing this music. I just love the unreserved sense of calm in Chloë’s vocals no matter what the music is doing. The chorus section in this track is one of my favourites of them all. The way the riff leads the way and the backing vocals give her a pedestal to belt out those sublime lyrics.
Track 7 ‘Hive Mind’ is definitely my favourite song on the album. Believe me, seeing this live is a hell of a solid performance and something you have got to see. It reminds me heavily of Tooland the vocals are just out of this world. They capture this incredibly dark, morbid sound so vividly. The drumming from Danni Nolan adds so much to this track and really makes it a primal, intense experience. This song also contains one of the most disgusting and filthiest riffs I’ve ever heard and just around 2:50 you will understand why. Total destruction everywhere. Danni returns in with the drums, building the atmosphere once again. Guitarist Farl also does some incredible work throughout this song and his precise style of playing goes incredibly well Sid’s lead work.
The final track on the album is ‘Out on the Western Plain’. This is a story about cowboys and it ticks every box on offer. Such a solid, driving rhythm throughout and the phaser sounds on the guitars sound absolutely magnificent. Chloë’s vocal style is completely perfect for this type of music and her nonchalant aura emanates through the music - it’s controlled and soulful but loose and elegant at the same time. There are some serious bass lines present and some more ripping cosmic solos from Sid on this track and both guitars sound like the amplifiers have been erected on the moon. This is probably my silver medal winner after ‘Hive Mind’.
‘Nocturnes’ is an astounding album by a band that have so much potential to get recognised on a global scale. They are without a doubt one of the best bands on the Emerald Isle in the present day and this record is hard evidence to support such a claim. Their blend of psychedelia with grunge and stoner rock/doom is a highly sought after formula and Mother Mooch are keeping the secret closely guarded - and rightfully so.

ALBUM REVIEW: Electric Citizen - "Higher Time"
By: Jake Wallace
Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 13/05/2016
Label: Riding Easy Records
Cincinnati 4-piece psych rockers Electric Citizen have released their second record, ‘Higher Time’, on RidingEasy Records as a follow up to their 2014 debut release 'Sateen'. As with the first album, it was recorded at The Diamonds studio in Cincinnati by Brian Olive.
Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 13/05/2016
Label: Riding Easy Records
‘Higher Time’ is a sincere reflection of a band that has been dedicated to having their own bespoke brand of ‘70s psychedelic rock. Driving riffs, solid rhythms, flawless vocals and explosive solos, this album is a superb follow-up to their debut release and shows how far the band have come since then. They have made this style of music appealing and popular in the modern day and show no signs of slowing down for the future.
“Higher Time” CD//DD//LP track listing:
1. Evil
2. Social Phobia
3. Misery Keeper
4. Devils in Passing Time
5. Golden Mean
6. Higher Time
7. Ghost of Me
8. Natural Law
9. Crux
10. Two Hearted Woman
2. Social Phobia
3. Misery Keeper
4. Devils in Passing Time
5. Golden Mean
6. Higher Time
7. Ghost of Me
8. Natural Law
9. Crux
10. Two Hearted Woman
The Review:
The album kicks off with ‘Evil’ and straight away you can tell why they chose this particular track name. Laura Dolan’s vocals are absolutely fantastic for this style of music and having a husband-wife combination with her husband Ross provides a unique kind of musical connection. The main riff is nice and chuggy and as the vocals blend in with the killer riffs, Laura’s voice is very reminiscent of Jillian Taylor’s vocal work in Philadelphia ’s Ruby the Hatchet.
The next track ‘Social Phobia’ is some straight up Sabbathianriffage and the female vocals work incredibly well which makes you wonder what might’ve transpired if Ozzy had been a woman! Around the 2min 40 mark Ross unleashes into a ripping solo with some otherworldly sounds and raw talent oozing from his playing. ‘Misery Keeper’, has a solid, driving riff throughout with some very interesting sections, drawing influence from a number of directions.
The first band that spring to mind are Dublin’s Mother Mooch who have a strikingly similar style and this combination of ‘70s style heavy rock riffs, psychedelic lyrics and female vocals is proving to be a heavily desired sub-genre of music due to the success of bands such as Ruby the Hatchet, Blood Ceremony and Purson in recent years. Electric Citizen have defined their sound and no matter what they turn their hand to, they are producing top notch psychedelic rock. Tracks 4 and 5 are packed with superb riffs and more soul-searing guitar solos from Ross.
The title track ‘Higher Time’ has a fairly simple structure but the raw power of Laura’s vocals combined with the sonic atmospheres lurking in the backdrop creates a very absorbing environment. After the slightly creepy spoken word interlude in the middle, the riffs wind back in and Ross launches off into another relentless guitar solo. The style of his solos are perfect for this style as it’s not taking away from the music or distracting you with elaborate guitar parts. It all just gels very nicely in a cohesive blend and the instruments all compliment each other as well as complementing Laura’s vocals.
‘Ghost of Me’ takes the tempo up a notch and they deliver the goods with some thrashing riffs and a slightly ominous tone from the keyboards combined with the entrancing vocals. ‘Natural Law’ is another fine example of how the band have defined their sound and set in stone their vision for both image and musical style. Ross’s solo playing is on fire in this track and his diversity as a rhythm and lead player really shows. ‘Crux’ has that swinging occult rock feel, it’s what I imagine lute players in medieval imbibing emporiums would’ve been playing if they had access to electric guitars, fuzz pedals and amp stacks. The final track ‘Two Hearted Woman’ begins with another master-crafted riff and it seems like Ross Dolan’s barrel of riffs has no end. The organ sounds are great in this track, layering a nice thick spread of sound among the rhythm section. The last section has the same stomping riff ascending up and up into a crescendo and the curtain falls bringing a close to an extremely solid album.
